Data Loss Source: The personal information of thousands of University of Cincinnati students and graduates has been stolen. The data, which included Social Security numbers, was encoded onto a Flash drive taken from an employee’s desk.

Additional Notes:: UC has alerted three major credit-reporting agencies and told everyone affected by the breach to do the same if they notice any suspicious activity related to their finances.

Home Depot Breach

Data Loss Source: A laptop containing the personal information of thousands of Home Depot employees is missing after it was stolen from a Massachusetts worker’s car.

Administaff Laptop Stolen

Data Loss Source: Administaff Inc., a Houston-based provider of outsourced human resources services, has notified 159,000 former and current employees about a stolen laptop containing their unencrypted personal data.

TSA Reports Missing Laptop

Data Loss Source: Two laptops with detailed personal information about commercial drivers across the country who transport hazardous materials are missing and considered stolen.

Size of Loss: 3,930 records
Affected Individuals: TSA drivers
Geographic Focus: USA
Data contained: The laptops belong to a contractor working for the Transportation Security Administration and contain the names, addresses, birthdays, commercial driver’s license numbers and, in some cases, Social Security numbers of 3,930 people.
Additional Notes:: The contractor, Integrated Biometric Technology, told TSA that the personal information was deleted from the computers before they were stolen, the letter stated. But after the second laptop was stolen, TSA investigators discovered that a person with data recovery skills could recover the personal information that the contractor deleted. TSA spokesman Christopher White said none of the information on the computers has been misused.

Latest Pfizer Breach is External

Data Loss Source: The spouses and domestic partners of about 1,800 Pfizer employees have been informed of data breach at Wheels Inc., which provides cars to Pfizer, mostly for use by its sales force.

Affected Individuals: Spouses and partners of Pfizer employees
Geographic Focus: Des Plaines, IL
Data contained: The breach at Wheels released onto the Internet names, addresses, birth dates and driver’s license numbers, but not Social Security numbers, according to the company.
Additional Notes:: The problem did not involve a breach of Wheels’ Web site; instead, it occurred at various times over a two-week period during data transmissions from individuals responding to questions posed through an online Web application. The information, sent to the Wheels site unencrypted, was used as part of background checks Pfizer requires so the significant others of Pfizer employees can be approved to drive leased company cars, according to the company.
