Data Loss Source: A hacker posted what appears to be the personal contact information and credit card data of 1,200 eBay users on the company’s Trust & Safety forums, which were promptly pulled offline to prevent the information from being accessed

Additional Notes:: An eBay spokeswoman said the posts were most likely the result of account takeovers and not of a security breach on eBay. Although eBay verified that the names and contact information was accurate, the company claims the credit card numbers contained in the posts were not those eBay or PayPal had on file for those users.

Data Loss Source: Three spreadsheets containing more than 5,000 Social Security numbers and other personal details about customers of ABN Amro Mortgage Group were inadvertently leaked over an online file-sharing network by a former employee.

Additional Notes:: Tiversa Inc., a Pittsburgh company that offers data-leakage protection services, traced the origins of the ABN data to a Florida computer with the BearShare software installed.

Data Loss Source: More than 8,000 former and current patients of two clinics affiliated with the University of Michigan have been notified that computer tapes containing their personal information were recently stolen.
Date of Loss:Sept. 9, 2007
Size of Loss: 8,000 records
Affected Individuals: Former and current patients of the University of Michigan’s School of Nursing.
Geographic Focus: Michigan
Data contained: 4,513 people records included names, addresses and medical information used in billing. Another 4,072 records included Social Security numbers.
Additional Notes:: Containing patient records as a backup to the clinic’s billing system, the tapes were kept in a locked box in an administrative office at the U-M School of Nursing.

Data Loss Source: Online brokerage TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. reported that one of its databases was hacked and contact information for its more than 6.3 million customers was stolen.

Data Loss Source: Certegy Check Services, a company that retailers rely on to prevent losses from bounced checks, has compromised the privacy of about 8.5 million consumers. Its clients include major retail stores, among them T.J. Maxx, Bed Bath & Beyond, Amazon.com, Best Buy, Sears and OfficeMax.

Affected Individuals: Customers of Certegy’s clients

Data contained: Customer data
Additional Notes:: A senior database administrator at Certegy misappropriated millions of confidential consumer records containing credit card, bank account and other personal information. The employee sold the data for marketing purposes rather than for identity theft or other types of fraud, investigators report. Still, the data breach has created serious concerns.
