Data Loss Source: A computer was stolen from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education (TCLEOSE), a state agency that licenses police officers.
Date of Loss: May 19, 2007
Size of Loss: 230,000
Affected Individuals: Every licensed peace officer, jailer and telecommunicator in Texas is on the TCLEOSE database.
Geographic Focus: Austin, TX
Data contained: Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and birth dates
Additional Notes:: Productivity Center Incorporated (PCI) is the Houston company that was burglarized.Burglars hit 23 buildings in one area of Houston, stealing several laptop computers from PCI, including one that belonged to the commission.

Data Loss Source: IBM has lost storage tapes containing sensitive employment-related information of some former and current IBM workers. The tapes were lost more than two months ago near IBM’s corporate headquarters, because of what a company spokesman called a “transportation incident” involving an IBM vendor.

Data contained: Archived personal information, including Social Security numbers, dates of hire and dates of departure from IBM.
Additional Notes:: The missing tapes require a tape drive to be read, and cannot be viewed from a PC, says IBM. The company has sent letters to all individuals potentially affected by the incident.

Data Loss Source: Hackers accessed a University of Missouri computer database and stole more than 20,000 Social Security numbers.
Date of Loss: May 9, 2007
Size of Loss: 22,396
Affected Individuals: Anyone who worked in the university’s system in 2004 who were also current or former students.
Geographic Focus: Missouri. The university has campuses in Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla and St. Louis.
Data contained: Social Security numbers
Additional Notes:: The hackers used IP addresses from China and Australia to steal the data. There is no evidence that any of the data has been misused.

workers, including airport security officers and federal air marshals, is missing.

Affected Individuals: Current and former workers
Geographic Focus: Chicago, IL
Data contained: Personal data, including employee names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, bank account and routing information.
Additional Notes:: Assuming that the drive was in fact stolen — it went missing from what was called a “controlled area” at TSA headquarters in Washington D.C. — officials have asked the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service to investigate.
