Alleged Identity Theft Schemes Exposed
Monday, October 9th, 2006Los Angeles Times journalist, Christine Hanley, reports that identity theft is one of the nation’s fastest-growing crimes. In response to this problem, federal investigators have launched a new task force, targeting identity thieves in Southern California.
According to U.S. Atty. Debra Wong Yang, chief of California’s Central District, investigations in 2006 alone have led to 45 arrests tied to numerous alleged schemes, including indictments this week against several mortgage brokers who have been accused of selling personal information about their clients. To warn citizens of how identity thieves work, investigators outlined some of the alleged scams that have been uncovered. Their outline shows that your mail carrier, mortgage broker or your waiter may be stealing your personal data.
